The relationships created between members of a family are often painful and dysfunctional for a variety of reasons. Things like the birth-order of the parents, birth-order of the children, parental expectations placed on their children, issues of fairness between siblings, as well as parental dysfunction caused by a host of personal problems and many other factors cause families to seek counseling.

Families with stepchildren almost always experience significant distress and conflict between the partners, a partner and the stepchildren, as well as the children themselves.

Families must have respect and rules. Respect is not just from children toward parents. Respect must always flows toward children as well and the children must feel that respect. Generally speaking, the younger the child, the more rules are needed. As children get older, they need fewer rules. If there seems to be more rules as children age, the family system needs examination.

Family counseling can help the family, as a whole, explore their unique reasons for conflict and seek understanding and resolution of those problems.
